The "How To" of Values: The Big WHY?
What you value you see and feel is important. So what makes anything important? Things are important to us when they are attached to reasons. Ever hear of acting reasonable? It means having reasons for behavior or actions. If you have enough personal reasons to do something then it gets done. If these reasons are strong, clear, and you can understand how they connect if your goals then they can inspire you.
I have used this idea in my legal practice to get Judges and District Attorneys to give me what I wanted by giving them what they wanted. Everyone wants something. If you serve their interests they will in turn serve yours. Zig Ziglar said it best, "help enough people get what they want and they will help you get what you want." In my marriage my wife places a high value on family and physical fitness. Taking her on a family vacation, and supporting her desire to work out can only benefit me as well her.
Make Lists of Reasons and Benefits
I write out lists of all the reasons something is important to me. Why would doing this behavior serve me? How would doing this behavior or not doing this behavior serve me? What are the specific benefits to me and those I care about? The more benefits and the more reasons I can attach to a given set of actions the more ingrained they are impressed into my psyche.
